G.B. Salm Amsterdam Alcohol Hydrometer Set with Thermometer and Correction Table

€800,00 EUR
A distinctive historic alcohol hydrometer set from Instrumenthandel v/h G. B. Salm in Amsterdam, comprising two glass hydrometers, a thermometer and accompanying documents in a fabric-lined wooden case. A collectible linking scientific instruments, spirits and Dutch excise history. The inside of the lid bears the imprint “Instrumenthandel v/h G. B. Salm AMSTERDAM Keizersgracht 642–644.” The glass hydrometers feature elegant handwritten inscriptions, including “Rijks Honderddeelige Alcoholweger.” The instruments rest in fitted recesses inside the case. HISTORICAL DETAILS AND DOCUMENTATION The accompanying correction table lists both hydrometers as No. 2, with the year 1929. The thermometer entry shows the year 1914. These are the dates recorded on the document; they do not independently establish when the instruments were manufactured. An accompanying label reads “INSPECTIE AMSTERDAM INV. & ACC.” A further stamp identifies the Laboratory of the Ministry of Finance in Amsterdam and is dated February 4, 1970. According to the provenance information supplied by the seller, this set is associated with measuring the alcohol content of spirits for excise assessment. The historical documents and inscriptions add a distinctive documentary dimension to the set. CONDITION AND MEASUREMENT ACCURACY According to the seller, the set spent approximately 50 years in warehouse storage. Its present measurement accuracy is uncertain. It is offered as a historical collectible, not as a guaranteed accurate or currently calibrated measuring instrument. The case, lining and documents show signs of age and use. Please examine the photographs carefully for the visible condition and included components. DETAILS Supplier’s imprint: Instrumenthandel v/h G. B.
