A tangible connection to Dutch customs and excise history: a historical alcohol hydrometer set in a long wooden case, containing two glass hydrometers, a thermometer and an accompanying correction table. The blue-bordered label on the case reads “Post Douane en Accijnzen LEEUWARDEN,” identifying the Leeuwarden Customs and Excise post.
According to the information supplied by the seller, the instruments are associated with W. Geissler Amsterdam and Pieterman Schiedam. Instruments of this kind were used to determine the alcohol content of spirits for excise purposes. Their paper scales, glass bodies and surviving documents give this set a distinctive historical character.
CORRECTION TABLE AND HISTORICAL DETAILS
The correction table lists hydrometer I, No. 765, with the year 1895; hydrometer II, No. 484, with no year entered; and thermometer No. 14, with the year 1958 and the note “geen correctie” (no correction). These dates appear on the document and do not necessarily date the entire set. The exterior label lists partly different instrument numbers, so the original composition of the set has not been confirmed.
According to the seller’s information, markings on the instruments include “Normalglas” and “Honderddeelige Thermometer Temp 15 Celsius.”
