A distinctive set for collectors of historical watchmaking tools: an antique topping tool cutter set, also known as Fraises pour Outil à Arrondir, presented in a wooden storage case with a beautifully aged patina. According to the seller’s information, the set is of Swiss/German origin and retains its original stepped wooden tray.
The cutters are mounted on individual steel shafts and carefully arranged in the case. These cutters were used with a rounding-up machine to refine the tooth profiles of watch and clock wheels. Matching cutters are an important part of making such a machine usable.
A particularly interesting detail is the group of six delicate loose guide pins displayed in front of the case, described by the seller as L-shaped guide fingers or guides. According to the supplied information, these helped guide the wheel tooth by tooth during cutting.
The wooden case has a characterful, timeworn appearance and two fastening hooks on the front, described by the seller as the original brass hooks. An appealing ensemble for a collection of historical horological tools.
