Vintage drafting instrument set in wooden case with purple lining

€175,00 EUR
A characterful vintage drafting instrument set in a wooden case with warm reddish-brown grain, a rectangular metal nameplate on the lid and deep purple lining. The removable tray holds compasses and assorted drafting components. The contrast between the gold-toned metal, purple fabric and dark wooden case makes this an appealing desk display for collectors of historical drafting equipment and scientific instruments. CASE AND INTERIOR • Wooden case with distinctive grain, metal hinges and a keyhole at the front. • Rectangular nameplate in the centre of the lid; no inscription is clearly readable in the photographs. • Removable fitted tray and lid lined with deep purple, velvet-like fabric. • Additional storage space beneath the tray, shown in the photographs. • Dimensions supplied by the seller: approximately 21 × 12 × 5 cm. • Weight including the case, supplied by the seller: 490 grams. INSTRUMENTS AND DATING The photographs show compasses and loose drafting components, including pen-like attachments and extension pieces, with gold-toned and steel-coloured parts. The seller describes the instruments as brass and steel, with manual adjustment screws and layered hinge construction. The exact composition and materials have not been independently established. The seller attributes the set to the nineteenth century, possibly the late Victorian period, circa 1870–1900. The maker, origin and dating have not been independently confirmed. The wood species is unknown; the suggested possibilities of rosewood or mahogany have not been established. Original use in cartography has not been verified. CONDITION AND CONTENTS Used condition with patina, discolouration and localised oxidation on the metal components. The case shows scratches and wear, and the purple lining has signs of use. The compartment beneath the tray shows staining and wear. The set is offered with only the instruments and components visible in the six photographs. Completeness has not been confirmed. The seller has checked that the compasses and adjustment screws move freely. No key is included. Tracked shipping is charged separately.
